Arcosanti - A Prototype Arcology
In 1970, the Cosanti Foundation began building Arcosanti, an experimental town in the high desert of Arizona, 70 miles north of metropolitan Phoenix. When complete, Arcosanti will house 5000 people, demonstrating ways to improve urban conditions and lessen our destructive impact on the earth. Its large, compact structures and large-scale solar greenhouses will occupy only 25 acres of a 4060 acre land preserve, keeping the natural countryside in close proximity to urban dwellers.

Dos Lagos, A Master Planned Mixed Use Development
A former silica mining site, Dos Lagos is a master planned mixed use development designed to reclaim damaged and abandoned land into a balanced and sustainable Live-Work-Play environment. Located along the I-15 in Corona, California, Dos Lagos represents one of the first mixed use concepts introduced in the Inland Empire, one of the fastest growing corridors in the U.S. Seven years in the making approximately 9 million cubic yards of earth are being moved to reclaim this site and construction of major roadway infrastructure and the first community of homes is underway. Once considered a bedroom community of large-lot homes, Dos Lagos represents one of the first projects to bring a variety of housing choices together in an integrated and highly amenitized environment designed to meet varying age groups and lifestyle choices. Urban Studies
Urban Studies at Southern Connecticut State University, is dedicated to providing a high caliber of quality education to advance knowledge through study, practice, and research. This is consistent with the University's commitment to scholarship and professional preparation, and to the engagement of the local community in an increasingly globalized and urbanized world. We have a strong and growing graduate program and a minor at the undergraduate level. The Urban Studies Program aims to equip students with the tools and techniques of appropriate urban policy and planning, which are culturally relevant, embracing community level collaboration and positive responses to cultural group conflict in differentiated cities. The approach of the program provides participants with a systematic, critical overview of contested ideas, concepts, principles and practices which are relevant to the understanding and promotion of co-existence and social justice in an increasingly diverse urban context. The Urban Studies Program is multi-disciplinary in nature, drawing on numerous bodies of knowledge and academic departments. The Urban Studies Program is designed to enable students to evaluate and integrate knowledge, skills, values and ethics, and to impart tools for scholarship, critical thinking and leadership, emanating from the educational process and experience at Southern Connecticut State University.
