  • Sam Houston State University's Biological Sciences Homepage

  • Programs in the Biological Sciences at Sam Houston State University have enjoyed a reputation of excellence and strength during most of the 20th century. The 21st century presents new challenges. Indeed, the knowledge explosion in the biological sciences during the latter half of the 20th century is unparalleled in history. With this knowledge explosion have come new challenges but also new and exciting opportunities in the form of new biotechnologies. The application and refinement of new and powerful techniques to existing and yet unknown problems and issues will most assuredly lead to major developments and breakthroughs in the biological sciences. Programs offered at SHSU provide students with the training to effectively participate in and contribute to the alleviation of existing and future problems in biology, medicine, and the environment. A dedicated and well-trained faculty and excellent classroom and laboratory facilities assure that the reputation of excellence of SHSU biology and environmental science programs will continue to grow. Instruction is offered by 16 departmental faculty leading to BA and BS degrees in Biology, MA and MS degrees in Biology, and the interdisciplinary BS degree in Environmental Science.

  • Snake Species of Northern Cyprus

  • In this study, between 17-31 July 2003 and 03-25 September 2003, in order to determine snake species of Northern Cyprus Turkish Republic, two-field study were conducted. In addition, previously collected and deposited in ZDEU (Zoology Department, Ege University) snake material, which belong to 11 different species (totally 66 specimens) was also studied. The 25 of collected specimens belong to Typhlopidae, 37 to Colubridae, 3 to Viperidae and one belongs to Boidae. Colour-pattern and pholidosis characteristics of these specimens were studied, some metric measurements were taken and ecological characteristics of species were presented.

  • "Operation RubyThroat: The Hummingbird Project"

  • Everybody loves hummingbirds, and these tiny feathered dynamos can be used to help students learn about science, math, geography, culture, and virtually any academic discipline. Operation RubyThroat is an award-winning cross-disciplinary project in which participants in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Central America collaborate to study behavior and distribution of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris). K-12 teachers and students especially are invited to participate in this Web-based project. The Operation RubyThroat Web site is the most comprehensive one available about hummingbird natural history and hummingbird banding and research. The project is an outreach initiative of Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History near York, South Carolina, USA ( ). Operation RubyThroat is affiliated with The GLOBE Program and has received major funding from the National Science Foundation.
