Department of Geophysics (Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb) is the only institution in Croatia for undergraduate and postgraduate education in the field of geophysics. After completing the courses of the first three years, during which the basic knowledge of mathematics, physics, meteorology, physical oceanography and seismology is provided, students may choose to study either Seismology and physics of the solid Earth or Meteorology and physical oceanography over the fourth year. After finishing the study they win B.Sc. degree in physics-geophysics. Scientific activities of the Department of Geophysics include research of earthquakes, physical properties of the Earth's crust, physical processes in the Adriatic Sea, weather, climate, interaction of physical phenomena in the atmosphere and the sea, and physico-chemical changes in the atmosphere related to climate changes and man-made activities. The research is mostly related to the Croatian region, but some results are of universal importance.
